What CrossFit Actually Looks Like

October 11, 2026 — CrossFit Pukekohe

Spring’s here, the mornings are lighter, and we’re getting a lot of people asking the same thing before they walk through the door: what actually happens in a CrossFit class? Fair question. Here’s the honest answer.

What a class actually looks like

CrossFit is constantly varied, functional training — gymnastics, weightlifting and cardio mixed together. In practice that means a session will usually have a bit of strength, a bit of skill and some conditioning, and it will look different the next time you come in. The workouts and the equipment change daily. Variety is king, so no two sessions look the same.

The constant is the coach. Every class is led by one, and their job is to watch how you move and scale the workout to suit you — your body, your experience, your day. You’re not left to figure out a whiteboard on your own. As one member wrote in a Google review, we’ve got “the best ‘hype you up coaches’ who will push you to be your best everytime.”

Classes run across the day, from the 5:15am crew through to afternoon and evening sessions, with CrossRocks on Saturday. Our doors are open weekdays 5:00am to 7:00pm, so there’s usually a slot that fits around work, school and family.

Who it’s for

CrossFit is for building strength, fitness and confidence. If you want to become fitter, stronger and more capable, this is the program. That’s it — there’s no fitness test at the door.

Our members range from total beginners to competitive athletes, all training in the same room at the same time, doing the same workout scaled differently. One member put it this way in a Google review: “Wether your an elite Crossfitter or a newbie you will have a good time and great workout.”

The myth worth killing

The myth is that you need to get fit before you start. You don’t. Workouts are adjusted to meet you where you are, and coaches scale movements and weights accordingly.

The second half of that myth is that you’ll be judged while you learn. Here’s what a member who started in September 2024 wrote in a Google review: “the CrossFit community here is the kind you wanna be around when you’re new to CrossFit and you’re not quite sure what you’re up to but you’ve always wanted to give it a go. No judgement passed, everyone is there to grind for themselves.”

How it connects to everything else

CrossFit is the centre of what we do, and the other programs run off it. Weightlifting is there if you want to dig into the fundamentals or sharpen lifts you already have. CrossRocks on Saturday is longer cardio efforts with functional movements, usually in pairs — steady or spicy, your call, no ego. Kids and Teens classes run during the school term with scaled movements, games and a grading system to work towards. And Open Gym, included with our Elite Membership, gives you unguided time to chase your own goals.
