How to Choose a Gym in Pukekohe
October 11, 2026 — CrossFit Pukekohe
October is when people start thinking about gyms again. The mornings are lighter, the evenings stretch out, and summer suddenly feels close. So before you sign anything, here’s an honest guide to picking a gym — including the parts where we tell you we might not be the right fit.
The kinds of gyms you’ll find
Broadly, there are three. The big commercial gym — rows of machines, long opening hours, train whenever you like, nobody watching. Cheap, flexible, and entirely on you to know what to do. The boutique studio — one format done well, a set class time, a coach at the front, usually a tighter price. And the CrossFit box, which is what we are: coached group classes, barbells and rigs rather than mirrors and machines, and the same faces in the room three times a week.
None of these is better. They’re different trades. The machine gym trades coaching for freedom. The box trades freedom for coaching and community. Be honest with yourself about which one you’ll actually turn up to.
Questions worth asking anywhere
Ask who is watching you move. Ask what happens on day one if you’ve never touched a barbell. Ask whether the workout gets changed for you, or whether you’re expected to keep up. Ask when the classes actually run and whether those times fit around work, school pick-up and the drive home. And ask what you’re locked into — a gym that won’t explain its terms plainly in a conversation is telling you something.
What makes this one different — and who we’re not for
Every class here is led by a coach who watches how you move and scales the workout to suit you, whatever your age, fitness level or experience. Workouts and equipment change daily — gymnastics, weightlifting and cardio mixed together, so no two sessions look the same. Total beginners and competitive athletes train in the same room, doing the same workout at different weights.
Alongside CrossFit we run Weightlifting, CrossRocks on a Saturday, and Kids and Teens classes during the school term with a grading system to work towards. Kids are welcome to come along and hang out safely while you train.
Who we’re not for: if you want to put your headphones in, follow your own programme and speak to nobody, a coached group class will frustrate you. Open Gym exists, but it’s for Elite Membership holders and it’s unguided — it’s the extra, not the main thing. Our classes run weekdays from the 5:15am crew through to evening, so if you need 10pm training, that’s not us.
One member wrote in a Google review: “Best place for CrossFit in Franklin. Workouts are super fun and can be scaled to any ability. Wether your an elite Crossfitter or a newbie you will have a good time and great workout.”
How to try one properly
Don’t judge a gym on one session. Our trial is free — first up is an introduction with a coach so you’re moving well in the foundational movements, then a week of classes to meet everyone and see how you find it. Go at the time you’d realistically train. Talk to the people in the room.
Read more about us, look at the membership options, or just book a trial class and come see.
As another member put it: “Be aware, if you do a trial you’ll get hooked for sure.”
